Care for Real has moved!

On Saturday, July 16, Care for Real did our final food distribution at 6044 N. Broadway and resumed full distribution of food four days later at our new pantry located at 5341 N. Sheridan Rd. We could not have accomplished the move without the assistance of the many, many volunteers who packed boxes, transported furniture, cleaned refrigerators and pitched in with everything needed to re-open on time.

Our new space gives us room to implement an "open choice" food selection for our clients by allowing them to pick their own food from nutritionally balanced food groups. A separate table allows them to select fresh bread, fruit and vegetables from a variety of available items. A streamlined registration desk and spacious waiting room brings clients into our facilities faster - something especially important during harsh weather. A new loading dock moves food quickly from the delivery truck to the storage area without the sore muscles which normally accompany delivery days.

Care for Real is on the move!

Care for Real is moving to commercial space at
The Breakers of Edgewater, 5339 N. Sheridan.

We’re making the move for two reasons. First and foremost, the building we’re currently in is being sold, so we don’t have a choice. We must move. Second, because of a five-fold increase in the number of families we serve each month, we are severely overcrowded in our present facility. Finding new space was not easy; most locations were simply too expensive. But, thanks to the cooperation of Senior Lifestyle Corporation, we have found a new, affordable home at The Breakers.

The move offers several benefits. The size of this space will allow us to treat our clients more efficiently and with greater dignity than ever before. There will be a large waiting area so clients won’t have to stand outside in the elements. The building’s loading dock will make it much easier to unload and move the more than 60,000 pounds of food we receive each month. And we can combine the pantry and clothes closet into one location again, offering better control and reducing the number of miles our van must travel each week.
